The first sixty days: why placements fail, and what readiness actually means

Technical skill gets a professional hired. Something else keeps them employed.

19 Aug 2026 · 4 min read

Ask employers why an international hire did not work out and the answer is rarely ‘they could not do the job’. It is almost always something else: the shift pattern was harder than expected, the supervision culture felt hostile, money ran out before the first salary, the contract said something the professional had not understood. These are readiness failures, and they are preventable.

Readiness is not a formality delivered in a hall the week before departure. It is specific preparation for a specific role in a specific place: what supervision looks like there and how performance is measured; what site safety rules carry immediate consequences; what the salary includes and excludes, and how overtime, leave and end-of-service work; how to budget until the first payday and send money home through legitimate channels; and what to do, and who to call, if what you find on arrival does not match the contract.

For the professional, readiness is the difference between a career and a return flight. For the employer, it is the difference between a supervisor who spends the first month managing surprise and one who spends it managing work. It is also the part of recruitment most often skipped, because it is not visible in a shortlist. We think it is the part that matters most.
